Parents' Association
The Falcons PA has always had a strong tradition of supporting the school, the boys and their parents by organising social events of various kinds, raising funds for charity and producing the annual school magazine.
None of these things can happen without the support of the parents and friends who help organise the events. Volunteers on the PA Committee help in many different ways:
Class Representatives
The Class Rep's role is mainly to encourage more interaction between the parents (and carers) of each class, through the organisation of informal social events, e.g. coffee mornings, drinks, etc. How such activities are organised is completely down to the Class Reps.
In addition to events organised for individual classes, the Class Reps are generally asked to assist the PA Committee in organising other events throughout the year. For the boys, past events have included a Halloween day in school, a Christmas fair, Easter activities and the main event of the year being a Summer Fair. Wherever possible the emphasis in these events is on providing activities for the boys' benefit and an opportunity for parents to interact with the staff and the boys in a social setting.
The Class Reps also organise class collections for the teachers and assistants at the end of the Autumn and Summer terms and are required in emergencies, e.g. bad weather, to assist the school in contacting parents.
All in all, the Class Rep role can be as little or as much as you want to make it, but it is a great way to get to know people better.
Charities Team
The Charities team is responsible for devising the PA's annual programme of charity fund raising events. The team is split into two parts. Firstly a charity team organises the parents’ and teachers’ events during the year (Quiz nights, Scottish Dancing and Whisky tasting etc).
Secondly a charity team works with the School to organise a programme of charity activities for the boys to get involved in. Previous examples of such activities include the Rotary Shoebox Scheme, Mothers’ Day plates etc. The main emphasis with all the charity fund raising is that it should seek to involve the boys as far as possible, to promote better understanding by them of the need for charitable works. Wherever possible, external charities input is sought to reinforce the message to the boys, e.g. inviting a speaker into School to explain how funds are used.
Year Book Team
The School Year Book provides a comprehensive and delightful record of all the activities that the boys undertake during the year. The Year Book team has to undertake many tasks in preparing the magazine for publication. Apart from needing people with little or lots of experience of editing and writing, etc, good amateur photographers are in demand to cover all the boys’ events during the year. Also as the year book aims to be self financing as far as possible, the team requires members who can help raise funds for example through advertising.
Finally, the PA is responsible for running a second hand uniform sale each year.
As you can see, the PA is extremely active and is a very important part of the school community. More than anything else however, the PA provides a great forum for parents, teachers and boys to get to know each other better.
